Feeder Canal Towpath Trail/Warren County Bikeway (June 2024)

For our second ride this year, we decided to stay local and ride from Fort Edward to Lake George on the Feeder Canal Towpath Trail and the Warren County Bikeway. This is another ride that we do a couple times each year, usually at the beginning and end of the season when the days aren’t quite as long.

We started at the shop, but we recommend parking at the Canal Street Marketplace. There is a water fill-up station there, and soon there will be a bike repair station. You’ll also be right around the corner from our local restaurants and brewery when you return from your ride. You’ll pass the shop as you follow the Empire State Trail/Champlain Canalway Trail on your way to the Feeder Canal Towpath Trail, so stop in - we’d love to see you!

Immediately after leaving the Empire State Trail/Champlain Canalway Trail in Fort Edward, the trail passes the historic Five Combines locks on one of the few paved sections of the Feeder Canal Towpath Trail. The rest of the trail is mostly hard-packed crushed stone with a few short paved stretches.

Continuing on, the trail passes Jack and Jill Ice Cream in Hudson Falls, and then continues along the Feeder Canal into Glens Falls. After navigating a couple blocks on the road, riders can pick up the Warren County Bikeway, which is paved the entire way. As you pass through Glens Falls on the trail, we recommend stopping at Rock Hill Bakehouse & Cafe. Their menu is entirely vegan (and delicious), but if you’re looking for something with meat or dairy, Coopers Cave Ale Company is just up the trail.

The trail through Glens Falls is flat, but as you make your way through Queensbury and into Lake George, there are some hills. There is also a brief on-road section, but we’ve always been given plenty of room to ride there and have not had any issues with drivers.

At the end of the Warren County Bikeway, you emerge to a picturesque view of Lake George. Continue along Beach Road to Canada Street where most of the shops and restaurants are located. We opted for dinner at 163 Taproom before riding back to Fort Edward

The ride from Fort Edward to Lake George is 17 miles one way (34 miles round trip). If you have questions about this ride or other rides, stop in and see us. We’re always happy to pass along all the information we have, and we’d love to talk with you about how we can help to make your ride more enjoyable.

If you’d like to come ride these trails without having to travel with your bike, we have rental bikes available.
